The Wood County Humane Society exists in order to bring about the best possible treatment and quality of life for all animals in Wood County.
CANINE COMPANION: There are a variety of responsibilities for assisting in
our canine care. Volunteers may help with regular dog walking, socialization of
each dog, and helping us provide enrichment. It is important tht volunteers are
comfortable handling and being around dogs, willing to help the dogs stay
active, and capable of cleaning up any messes.
Wood County Humane Society staff and board members provide valuable
training in each of the areas that we need help in. It is important to note that
volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian
at all times during their volunteer service. We also suggest that a volunteer
has had a tetanus vaccination within the last 5-10 years.
SHELTER CLEANING: The dog kennels and free roaming cat room are
thoroughly cleaned every day. This includes, but is not limited to, sanitizing
living spaces, food and water dishes, toys, and bedding. All areas are
cleaned in the mornings from 8 am - 12 pm. All volunteers must be 16 or
accompanied by an adult
FELINE FRIEND: A feline friend can help out in numerous ways. Two big
ways you can help the cats are through socialization and stimulations. This
often takes place through gentle play and affection. Helping to clean up
messes and keeping our cats and the cat room tidy is an important part of
being a feling friend. All volunteers must be 16 or accompanied by an adult.
OFFICE WORK: If you have customer service experience, and would love
interacting with the public, we could use your help! We are looking for
volunteers to help out in the office by answering phones, greeting people as
they visit our shelter, and assist with adoptions. All volunteers must be 18.
FOSTER HOME: Foster care homes are greatly needed by the WCHS.
Because of our limited space, temporary placement is greatly needed to care
for the many animals that need homes before being ready for adoption. The
WCHS is responsible for vet care and will provide food, medicine and
needed supplies. There is a brief application process. To learn more, please
EVENTS: There are various ways in which we connect with our community
one of which is events. There are three main types of events that you could
assist with: fundraising, adoption, and education. Each requires different
types of help. Offsite events tend to involve a degree of travel as we try to host
events throughout the county. We are unable to provide volunteer
transportation. If you would like to help by attending fundraising meetings and
helping to organize these events, please consider the Fundraising
GROUNDS AND MAINTENANCE: First impressions are lasting. Here at the
WCHS, our lawn and grounds are any visitor's first impression. As a grounds
and maintenance volunteer you would help maintain the yard throughout the
year, help with maintenance, and if you're knowledgeable with tools, we
wouldn't mind having you on hand to help out when things break down from
time to time.
PET STORE SUPPORT: Help at area pet stores with our in-store animal
programs. You will visit designated stores on a regular basis and change food
and water bowls, clean cages and help groom and socialize our animals
which are being temporarily housed at local pet stores while they are waiting
to be adopted.
